WASHBOURNE, J. Woodward - J.W. Washbourne, a life long citizen of Arkansas and the adjacent Indian Territory, is no more. He died at the residence of his brother-in-law, Dr. W.D. Polson, in the Cherokee Nation, on the morning of the 15th inst. in the fifty third year of his age. During the better days of the Republic Major Washbourne was a resident of this city. He had married the daughter of John Ridge, the celebrated Indian Chief, was in affluent circumstances and his hospitality and universal kindness to suffering humanity in whatever form presented is known to all of our old citizens. Some 27 or 8 years ago Maj. W, in connection with Wm. Quesenbury, was editor of the Van Buren, Arkansas Intelligencer. His prose and poetry all evinced the ripe scholar, the ready writer. Many tender and holy emotions found expression from the poetic pen of J.W. Washbourne that will outlive the dull cold marble that will mark his last resting place. He held many positions of trust and profit and at the beginning of the late war was U.S. Seminole Agent. Thousands of dollars were received and disbursed by him and no man can now breathe the foul breath of dishonor on his fair name. The war found him wealthy, it left him bankrupt in fortune and health. Whatever his faults may have been he was more sinned against than sinning. His sensitive and good nature could not rally while under the dark wing of misfortune. A few months ago his wife died; since he has gone down until death released his pure spirit from the troubles of life. He has left an interesting family of children and wide circle of friends to mourn his loss. Washbourne belonged to Arkansas, her people will revere his memory. P.
