Virgil Leroy Poafpybitty Sr.
STECKER Funeral for Virgil Leroy Poafpybitty Sr., 63, Stecker, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Red Buffalo Hall, Carnegie, with the Rev. Monroe Tsatoke and Terry Ware, lay speaker, officiating.
Mr. Poafpybitty Sr. went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at his home.
Burial will follow at Satepauhoodle Family Cemetery under direction of Comanche Nation Funeral Home.
He was born Feb. 5, 1946, in rural Mountain View, to Thompson Poafpybitty and Etheline Haumpy Sankadota. He was reared by his grandparents, Mary and James "Honey-Ho" Haumpy of Carnegie. He graduated from Carnegie High School, where he was a well-distinguished athlete in football, basketball, and track and received numerous awards. After graduation, he attended Haskell Institute, Lawrence, Kan., Okmulgee State Tech in Industrial Arts, and Southwestern Oklahoma State College, Weatherford, where he majored in business. He moved to Washington, D.C., to work with the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a mail clerk. He worked for a period of time with PSO in Tulsa as a press operator. He eventually moved back to Carnegie. He learned many powwow and peyote songs from his grandfather and would accompany him to powwows.
He is survived by two sons: Shannon Poafpybitty, South Sioux City, Neb.; and Virgil Poafpybitty Jr., Pine Ridge, S.D.; five brothers: Bruce Poafpybitty Sr., Apache; Dale Sankadota, Lawton; Ducky Sankadota, Richard Spur, and Jimmy Saukadota, Anadarko; and Greg Ahhaitty, Carnegie; sisters: Gail Sankadota, Gloria Cross and Joyce Vinyard, all of Anadarko; Irma Sankadota, Oklahoma City; grandchildren: Anthony Walker Poafpybitty, Cassondra Walker Poafpybitty, Isaiah Walker Poafpybitty, Kiana Rose Poafpybitty, Nami Clare Poafpybitty, Virgil Leroy Poafpybitty III, Ava Faye Poafpybitty and Tokala Orion Poafpybitty; two great-grandchildren: Yasenia Goodshield and Carmelita Walker Poafpybitty; nephews and nieces; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Etheline and Thompson Poafpybitty; stepfather, Jasper Sankodata Sr.; four brothers: Thomas Poafpybitty, Junior Poafpybitty, Danny Sankadota and Jasper Sankadota Jr. ; a sister, Mary LaNora Poafpybitty; grandparents: James and Mary Haumpy, and David and Chappy Poafpybitty; nephew, Bruce Poafpybitty Jr.; and niece, Amy Sankadota.
Pallbearers are Tom Kauliaty, Anthony Walker Poafpybitty, Greg Ahhaitty, Wilson Ware, Bobby Ware, Sr., Jasper Sankadota III and Jeremy Sankadota.
Honorary pallbearers are Charlie Ahhaitty, Ernest Redbird, Gene Ray Poafpybitty, Jack Sankadota, Dale Sankadota, Charsey Poafpybitty, Danny Sankadota, Russell Mithlo, Jr., Michael Sankadota, Johnnie Sankadota, Herb Redbird, Alfred Haumpy, Sr., Thomas Poafpybitty, Donald Sankadota, Fred Allen Kauliaty, Rickie Clark, Seth Pewo and Stevie Haumpy.
