July 7, 1843 - May 19, 1918

George's father was William Bent, founder of Bents Fort near LaJunta, Colorado. George was born at the fort, His mother was Owl Woman, a Cheyenne who died giving birth to George. His grandfathyer was a member of the Boston Tea Party.

George served the Confederacy in the Missouri State Guard
1st. Missouri Calvary. He was captured at the "Battle of Corinth" & interred in the Gratiot Street Military Prison for a brief period of time. When released, he swore the "Oath of Allegiance" and returned to his Father's home in Colorado. George Bent went on to live with the Cheyenne people where he married Magpie, daughter of Black Kettle. Ne also married Kiowa Woman and Standing Out.

He was living with the Cheyenne when, on November 29, 1864, Colonel John Chivington with 700 soldiers attacked Chief Black Kettles camp which was composed mostly of women, Children and old men. It was a wanton slaughter and one of the worst atrocities of the Indian Wars. It would come to be known as the Sand Creek Massacre (also known as the Chivington Massacre, the Battle of Sand Creek or the Massacre of Cheyenne Indians).

George survived by hiding all day in a hole under the banks of Sand Creek and lived unti 1918 when he died in a flu epidemic.
