Daniel Meigs Funeral Rites Slated Monday -

TAHLEQUAH (Special) - Another link with Cherokee history was severed Thursday when the great-grandson of Chief John Ross, 94-year-old Daniel Boone Meigs of Park Hill, died in a Tahlequah nursing home.

Funeral services for Meigs will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Reed-Culver Funeral Chapel with Reverend Max Squyres, pastor of southside Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in Ross Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Bob Duncan, Junior Whitmore, John Hathcoat Jr., Sam Parnell, Claude Coke and Carl Parrish.

Meigs' great-grandfather was chief of the Cherokees 1828-1839 during the time they were in the East. After the removal of the second group of Cherokees to Oklahoma, Chief Ross was made chief of the United Cherokees, a post he held until his death in 1866 at the age of 76. Chief Ross' father was from Scotland.

Born December 25, 1874, in Cherokee County, Meigs was a life-long resident of the county. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife Carrie Teel Meigs of Park Hill; three sons; a daughter; a step-son; a step-daughter; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two sisters.
