Killed In Battle
A Confederate Soldier

John was killed in a skirmish with Union soldiers on Bayou Menard (Manard) near Fort Gibson, IT. His commanding Officer, Cap. Thomas Fox Taylor, CSA was also killed at the same time. It seems that he had a premonition of his impending death in the sentiment of his poem fround in Starr's "History of the Cherokee Indians" and in an aughgraph book belonging to Victoria S. Hicks and dated July 21, 1862. (Stanza 1): "I stand at the portal and knock, and tearfully, prayerfully wait, O! who will unfasten the lock, and open the beautiful gate?" (Stanza 2) "Forever and ever and ever, Must I linger and suffer alone? Are there none that are able to sever, The fetters that keep me from home?" (Stanza 3) "My spirit is lonely and weary, I long for the beautiful streets. The workd is so chilly and dreary, And bleeding and torn are my feet."
